Do Computer Glasses Help With Eye Strain?

Walk into any electronics store or scroll any shopping app and you'll find "computer glasses" marketed as a fix for tired eyes. Some of that marketing overlaps with blue-light glasses, some of it is a genuinely different product, and the line between the two gets blurred often enough that it's worth sorting out before you spend money on either.
Computer glasses — lenses prescribed specifically for your screen's working distance — can reduce eye strain for people whose focusing system has to work harder than it should at that distance, such as those over roughly 40 or with an uncorrected or mismatched prescription. They address a focusing (accommodation) problem, not light exposure, and they aren't the same product as blue-light glasses. An eye exam is the only reliable way to know if they'd help you.
Two different products, one confusing name
"Computer glasses" gets used loosely, but it usually refers to one of two distinct things:
- Task-specific prescription lenses, ground for the distance between your eyes and your monitor — typically 50–70 cm — rather than for driving-distance vision or up-close reading. These address how hard your eye's internal focusing muscle has to work.
- Blue-light filtering lenses, which reduce the amount of blue-spectrum light reaching your eye, regardless of prescription. These address light exposure, not focusing effort.
They're often sold under the same "computer glasses" umbrella, sometimes combined into one pair, which makes it easy to assume they do the same job. They don't.
What the focusing-effort version actually addresses
Your eyes use a muscle inside them, the ciliary muscle, to change the shape of the lens and keep near objects in focus — a process called accommodation. Sustained screen use asks that muscle to hold a mid-range focus for long, uninterrupted stretches, which is a different demand than the brief close-up or far-away tasks eyes evolved around. Who's most likely to notice a difference

Contact lenses complicate the picture slightly. Others find contacts alone are enough. Single-vision, bifocal, or progressive computer lenses
For people who already need correction at more than one distance — commonly those with presbyopia — computer glasses aren't always a single, simple lens. Some are single-vision lenses ground for one specific working distance. Others are a mild bifocal or progressive design intended to ease the transition between a keyboard at close range and a monitor a bit farther away, without needing to tilt the head as much as a standard progressive lens for general use might require. What an eye exam adds that guessing can't
Because computer glasses are a prescription product, an eye-care professional is the only source that can tell you whether your eyes actually have a working-distance mismatch worth correcting. An exam can identify:

- Early presbyopia, which often shows up first as screen fatigue before it's noticeable elsewhere
- Whether your symptoms look more like a focusing issue or more like dry eye, glare sensitivity, or another cause entirely
